The GhostBox is an interactive installation that invites people to engage with the stories of the ceremonial clock in the state rooms. In the form of a multisensory rectangular stele, the GhostBox stands about three meters in front of the clock and stands out from the magnificent rooms with its white, geometric body.
On the top of the stele, in the corners, there are four different figures made of transparent plastic, which embody the ghosts of the past: the merchant, the watchmaker, and Mother Nature tell of times gone by. The activist establishes the connection to the present. Interaction with the GhostBox is simple and intuitive thanks to its design. A gently pulsating light encourages users to move a figure onto the small pedestal in the center of the stele. As soon as a figure is placed in the center, the spirits of the magnificent clock come to life: the selected figure lights up and a story is played from a hidden speaker behind the clock. This encourages playful discovery of further stories.
This concept was developed as part of the course “Interventionen. Museen als aktive Orte der Demokratie”. The task was to develop critical perspectives on the objects in the state apartments and make them accessible with the help of interactive prototypes. The seminar was held in cooperation with the Department of Education, Outreach, and Society of the "Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden" (SKD) as part of the project “Museen als aktive Orte der Demokratie”, which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media.
Further implementation:
The concept was ultimately selected by the "Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden". It was purchased and professionally produced by the SKD for the exhibition "Fait à Paris. Die Kunstmöbel des Jean-Pierre Latz am Dresdner Hof."
The following media documents the final implementation of the "GhostBox" by the "Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden".
